VANDALISM: The wrecked fence at the tennis courts. For the second time in as many weeks, the Tuross Head Tennis Court complex has been vandalised.
Two weeks ago, windows in the clubhouse were smashed and the clubhouse trashed.
Earlier this week, valuable court maintenance equipment was ruined, the court surface was damaged, the toilet block torched and court fencing damaged.
The damage bill for just the past two weeks is well into the thousands, a spokesman said.
He said the cost was directly borne by the tennis club members.
“Some people probably think, ‘oh it’s covered by insurance or the council’s got plenty of money’,” he said.
“What they don’t realise is that any repairs for the damage are either paid directly from tennis club funds or from court hire funds which have been set aside to upgrade the courts.
“That is, every cent is coming out of money raised by the Tuross Head tennis court users.”
The spokesman said the “moronic attacks” were all the more frustrating as only a year ago the Tuross community banded together to help stop a council proposal to remove two courts.
“Here we are, trying to improve the appearance of the complex, hosting tournaments, encouraging juniors, trying to ensure these facilities are available for future generations. Yet all this work is undone by a few idiots apparently from that same community.
“There’s no point trying to reason with the individuals involved who not doubt will get some sick thrill out of the notoriety. However, somebody must know who these people are or have seen or heard something.”
